If there’s one thing that South Africans love more than SUVs and bakkies, it’s a mid-range hatchback that can do both. Enter the Renault KWID 2019! The KWID launched on South Africa’s shores in November 2016 and has since sold over 23,000 models. Even now, this model is still a favourite for many local motorists, which can be seen by the 1098 units sold in August of this year. This car boasts an array of impressive features and an affordable price tag to boot, making it the obvious choice for many South African motorists.
The History Of The Renault Kwid
The concept of Renault’s SUV-inspired star made its debut at the 2014 Auto Expo in India and was officially launched in Indonesia in 2016. This concept was a bit more flamboyant than the models of reliable practicality we know and love today. To give you an idea: this first KWID incorporated a roof-mounted, remote-controlled quadcopter, butterfly doors, and ridiculously massive R16 wheels.
This 2016 KWID got its share of criticism for offering derivates with only one airbag and no ABS. As much as folks like affordability in a car, safety is always a priority. However, most drivers found the car had a great look and handled uneven terrain (see: potholes) fairly well. The steering is light, but stable enough at high speeds. Despite the call to iron out some kinks, the Renault KWID impressed for the most part.
The Renault Kwid in 2019
In 2018, the Renault KWID got a facelift, which added features like pretensioner seatbelts, two additional USB sockets, a rear armrest, and a new grille. But this is just the start. This upgraded model is more equipped to meet the needs of the entry-level segment.
The belly of the beast remains the same: an affordable, SUV-inspired hatchback that offers spacious interiors, show-stopping exteriors, and reliable mechanical function. One of the critical updates to this model is the introduction of ABS across the entire range.
This is all powered by Renault’s new 1.0-litre Smart Control efficiency (SCe) engine optimised for increased performance and efficiency. This tech can really pay off in the long run, since an engine optimised for frugal fuel consumption (the KWID only uses as little as 4.4 litres per 100 km) can improve your chances of getting a lower premium on your car insurance.
Despite being an entry-level vehicle, the KWID offers an innovative exterior design and practical, but inviting, interior. The SUV influence is most obvious in its high ground clearance (180mm) and a high driving position, offering greater visibility and helping you own the roads in the urban traffic, the open highway, or the great off-road. Its short front and rear overhangs give the impression of strength and reliability. The bold front grille is built around Renault’s diamond logo, while the headlights incorporate Renault’s new signature lighting design with a chrome trim.
Of course, you’re quick to realise that there is more to the Renault KWID when you look beyond the exterior. The KWID treats its drivers to a 7” Touchscreen MediaNav with Bluetooth, USB, AUX, and MP3 playback, all of which is complimented with a smartphone mirroring in the form of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. Other features that are standard across all derivatives include front electric windows, aircon, remote central locking, and ABS brakes.
The Renault KWID’s latest incarnation is available in four models:
- Renault KWID Expression 1.0-litre SCe
- Renault KWID Dynamique 1.0-litre SCe
- Renault KWID Dynamique AMT 1.0-litre SCe
- Renault KWID Climber 1.0-litre SCe
All of the above models come standard with a 5-year/150 000 km mechanical warranty and a 6-year anti-corrosion warranty as well as a 2-year service plan. For an extra R2,522, you can get a metallic paint job on your brand new KWID. Renault also offers to throw in 1 year of Comprehensive Insurance Cover. For anything that comes after that, you’ve got All Things Motor.
As you can see, Renault still lives up to its reputation of offering affordable, quality, mid-range vehicles. The latest take on the KWID has addressed many of the key safety issues many critics had with the original product. But Renault didn’t end it there, adding on innovative features, like the multimedia interface, that make a trip in the KWID a joy for the whole family. In short, the Renault KWID 2019 version delivers a ride to remember.
